MEET NICOLE HUGGINS
Nicole Huggins immigrated to the U.S. from Romania as a child. While waiting for entry to the U.S. she lived in Italy, where she developed a passion for art. She grew up on the East Coast and continued to learn about art in classes and countless hours in museums worldwide. Although she was accepted to art school, her mother persuaded her to first study liberal arts. She earned degrees in political science, economics and philosophy. Her majors led her to a career in law, with a concentration in civil rights. She continued to paint throughout her life. Upon retiring, she decided to dedicate herself to artistic expression. Nicole has worked in many mediums including oil, acrylics and watercolor. In recent years she has concentrated on soft pastels due to the vibrancy of their pigment. Nicole has been living with her family in Colorado since 1992 and also has a place in Florida. She is Board member of the Pastel Society of Colorado, member of the Pastel Society of America, and actively participates in the Evergreen Center for the Arts.
Nicole is drawn to the beauty of nature and our fleeting role in it. In her landscapes and seascapes, she uses perspective, color and value to invite the viewer to contemplate nature and their relationship to it. Living in Colorado, she is inspired by the majestic landscapes of the Rockies. While in Florida, she is captivated by the ever changing hues of the Gulf of Mexico. Nicole has also traveled extensively abroad and draws upon her travels for inspiration. She was influenced by European Impressionist painters as well as American landscape artists. Nicole sees nature as something that is ever changing, yet eternal, which puts our mortality into perspective. She feels that art is like music. You can enjoy many different types and what is good is a personal experience and relationship you have with that piece of art. Ideally artistic expression has something to say and the form is not as important as the thought or feeling it evokes in the viewer. Nicole's work reflects a European sensibility and she is most interested in the portrayal of light in her subjects. In the end, art is part of life and the biggest influence in her life is her family. Nicole’s family made her believe you can become anything you have the talent, passion and dedication to become, sooner or later.
